Kindle Fire...Is it for me?

Visit Carolyn's Reading On the Go Store for all your Kindle needs - Get Your Kindle Now!

Wondering what's the deal with Kindle Fire?  It's in color, amazing color, and Amazon's response to the NookColor and Nook Tablet.  My girlfriend got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. Ahhhh...her kids are so sweet.  While we were having lunch at Famouse Dave's (great ribs...mouth watering), she showed me her Kindle Fire.  It's Wi-Fi only, bummer, but there are alot of businesses who now provide free Wi-Fi; unfortunately Famous Dave's wasn't one of those. Hint:  FD get free Wi-Fi for us gadget geeks.

Well, she pulled out her Kindle Fire and I was blown away by the clarity and richness of the screen.  She had it on a slots game, one of the free apps she could download from Amazon.  The beauty and vibrancy of the color on that Kindle Fire had my mouth watering (the ribs hadn't arrived yet).  Like I said, FD doesn't offer free Wi-Fi so she couldn't show me the download or web connectivity; but she guaranteed me it was great.  She let me take it for a spin.  If you're familiar with the Kindle for PC you know about the library display; looks just like a library shelf.  All her books displayed all nice, neat and in vibrant color.  It's touch screen and real easy to use.  I still can't get the beauty of that screen out of my mind. Famous Dave's ribs delicious. Perfect day.

KINDLE EREADERS...WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Visit Carolyn's Reading On the Go Store for all your Kindle needs - Get Your Kindle Now!

So many Kindles, which should you choose?  Suddenly, there has been an explosion of Kindles over the last few weeks.  So are you in a quandry of which one to buy?

That's simple, and I'll tell you why.  Don't let the prices fool you, there's a Kindle for $79, one for $99;  one for $139, and one for $199.   What's it all about you ask...it's called advertising AND connectivity.

If you just want an ereader without alot of bells and whistles, wi-fi only,  no internet other than to download books, no color screens, then choose the $79.  You can find out more about connectivity here.

All the models with the exception of the Kindle Fire have a 6" inch screen; the Kindle Fire has a 7" inch screen.  They are all light weight.  Now, why such a wide range of prices for the Kindles, you ask?   Well, it's the advertising...do you want yours with or without special advertising or special offers.  If you want the lower priced models, you are actually opting in to have advertising appear on your device.  Of course,  if you don't want advertising to appear on your Kindle, you can purchase a unit without the special offers feature.  It's up to you, all the offers appear to be unobtrusive, less so than some websites I've visited.

You can learn more and compare the Kindles below.

Is Free Kindle Reading Apps Worth It?

Benq laptopImage via WikipediaVisit Carolyn's Reading On the Go Store for all your Kindle needs - Get Your Kindle Now!

So you've been drooling over the Kindle 3G or Kindle Wi-Fi for awhile, but your desire to buy a Kindle and your bills haven't converged favorably.  I understand that.  A Kindle 3G or pay the electric bill?  Hmmm, electric bill wins every time.

But you do have a computer or a laptop, if you didn't you wouldn't be reading this blog.  So while you're waiting for the universe to align so you can buy your Kindle, may I suggest the free Kindle reading apps for PC, MAC or ipad.  This gives your pc or laptop the capabilities of a Kindle without the Kindle.  You can purchase books and download to your pc, laptop, iphone or ipad.  Is it worth it?  Let me say this if you love to read, definitely a big yes.

I downloaded the Kindle Reading App for PC onto my laptop in a matter of minutes -- that's how easy it is.  And started using it right away.  It comes with three books for your reading pleasure so you can start using it right away.  Once you start using your free Kindle reading app, you'll find it hard to resist adding more books to your library.

You may not be able to afford the Kindle 3G or Wi-Fi right now; but you can afford to buy books to add to your library.  Books usually cost about $9.99 and download directly to your device.  Think about how much money you can save, time driving to the bookstore, the high cost of gas (can you believe how much a tank of gas has gone up to? over $3.29 a gallon), or ordering books online and paying shipping and still having to wait for them to arrive.  You know shipping costs are going to go up because of rising gas prices. With your free Kindle Reading App, just purchase your book or books and download to your device.  No gas, no shipping costs.

Kindle 3 or Kindle Wi-Fi? Which to Buy?

Cover of "Kindle Wireless Reading Device,...Cover via AmazonVisit Carolyn's Reading On the Go Store for all your Kindle needs - Get Your Kindle Now!

You've probably seen the new Kindle Wi-Fi which came out several weeks ago with the great low price of $139.00. There are actually 2 Kindles on the market with competitive price tags, the Kindle 3G and the Kindle Wi-Fi. If you're in the market for an ebook reader or doing your Christmas shopping, you may start to wonder which one should you buy.

The Kindle Wi-Fi has a low price tag of $139.00; while the Kindle 3G costs $189.00, which is very reasonable. So what is the $50 difference in the price?

But first, let me tell you both of the Kindles have pretty much the same features, the difference in looks and performance is barely discernible. The Kindle Wi-Fi is lighter in terms of weight, 8.5 oz vs 8.7 oz. The Kindle 3G comes in Graphite or White, while the Kindle Wi-Fi comes in Graphite only. No big deal, since you can find skins for either one. They both play MP3, they both can store and play audible books, they both have web browser capability, drawback for both they can only do one page at a time, they both have clear sharp screens, easy to learn how to use.
So what's the $50 difference -- connectivity.

The difference in a nutshell.

The Kindle Wi-Fi for $139: Free Wi-Fi access in AT&T hotspots, no sign ups, no logins, no registration required. Downloads using Wi-Fi are faster. If you have no problem connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots or are within the AT&T 3G area, or have Wi-Fi connectivity at home, then this is a good buy. And, if you don't mind that it comes in only the graphite color.

The Kindle 3G (+Wi-Fi) for $189: The $50 difference. Free 3G access in over 100 countries. You get mobile connectivity anywhere, anytime, no worrying about Wi-Fi hotspots. The Kindle 3G also offers the Wi-Fi connectivity option if you are in a AT&T 3G area or wi-fi hot-spot for faster downloads of your books.

If you don't travel internationally or have no trouble finding Wi-Fi hotspots, then you definitely want to consider the Kindle Wi-Fi, and save yourself $50.

If you have trouble finding Wi-Fi hot spots, not sure what a hot-spot is or if you even have connectivity, or live outside the AT&T 3G area, you should consider buying the Kindle 3G.  Also, if you are buying the Kindle as a Christmas present for someone else, I'd suggest buying the Kindle 3G since you may not know if the person has wi-fi connectivity in their area.  Nothing worse than buying a gift the person is frustrated using.

Visit my Kindle store for all your needs.  Not too keen on white & graphite colors, check out the new skins, make your kindle reflect your personality.  Show me the Kindle

Kindle class: Darden tests e-book

news-kindleLiterary figures like Oscar Wilde become screensavers on Kindle, explains new Darden student Joe Chard.

Joe Chard just started the MBA program at Darden Business School, and he just got a Kindle, Amazon’s electronic reader.

“I had it on the coffee table and my wife put a cup of coffee on it,” says Chard. “I said, ‘No– it’s expensive.’ She thought it was a book.”

And with Darden-emblazoned leather jackets on the test Kindles, they do look like slender volumes.

Chard is one of 60 students from the class of 2011 chosen to try out the “wireless reading device” that could obsolete books in a pilot program with Amazon.

“I was really excited when I heard they were using them,” says Chard. “Then I heard it was only one section, not the whole class.” The incoming class is divided into five sections, and Chard was relieved to be in the Kindle-using section.

“I’m a little bit leery of it,” says section-mate student Liz Brower, “because I’m traditional.” But Kindle use is not mandatory, and she’s willing to give it a shot.

Even among faculty, pleased with the prestige of Darden being one of Amazon’s chosen seven schools– the others are Princeton, Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Pace, University of Washington and Reed College in Oregon– there’s a bit of apprehension.

“I’m a book person,” says associate dean Robert Carraway. “It scared me.”

However, he touts the improved screen size and lighting of the latest model, the Kindle DX, how lightweight it is, and how it solves certain reading dilemmas, such as, “When you’re rushing to catch a plane and trying to decide which two books to grab.”

And the New York Times, Washington Post and Boston Globe are available on Kindle at a reduced subscription rate.

Reducing paper consumption was one of things that interested Darden in the device.

“That really resonated with me because of Darden’s sustainability initiative,” says Michael Koenig, Darden’s liaison with Amazon. He envisions “a paperless MBA.”

Darden is the only business school in the pilot program, and its case studies will be available to the students on Kindle as well as on paper, at least for the first year. Students who wish to keep their retail-$299 Kindles at the end year may do so for $200.

Whether Kindle will be the reading device of the future, Koenig can’t say. “We were not convinced it had value, but were eager to test it out,” he notes, citing Darden’s innovative spirit.

Joe Chard plays with his Kindle like a kid with a new toy. “It’s really easy to read,” he says, and demonstrates how if the angle of the Kindle changes from vertical to horizontal, the text changes to be readable from the different angle as well.

But watch the coffee. If the e-reader gets broken, says Koenig, “We’re not going to invest in another Kindle.”

Why Do I Keep Thinking Star Trek

AmazonKindleUserImage via Wikipedia

Visit Carolyn's Reading On the Go Store for all your Kindle needs - Get Your Kindle Now!

Every time I see the Kindle, I keep thinking of star trek. I remember as a kid watching the tv show and seeing the yeoman giving the captain a report to read, it wasn't a book, but a metal box, and he just glanced at it and then signed it. I thought to myself, how cool was that. Where were the papers? Didn't he have to turn a page or something. Nope just glance, and sign. I wanted one of those. For what I don't know but it looked so not of this world. That was the 60's, the 1960's and it was just sci-fi.

Now it's the 21st century, and there's the Kindle. Not a metal box but now my dream has come true. Sweet.
