Kindle 3 or Kindle Wi-Fi? Which to Buy?

You've probably seen the new Kindle Wi-Fi which came out several weeks ago with the great low price of $139.00. There are actually 2 Kindles on the market with competitive price tags, the Kindle 3G and the Kindle Wi-Fi. If you're in the market for an ebook reader or doing your Christmas shopping, you may start to wonder which one should you buy.

The Kindle Wi-Fi has a low price tag of $139.00; while the Kindle 3G costs $189.00, which is very reasonable. So what is the $50 difference in the price?

But first, let me tell you both of the Kindles have pretty much the same features, the difference in looks and performance is barely discernible. The Kindle Wi-Fi is lighter in terms of weight, 8.5 oz vs 8.7 oz. The Kindle 3G comes in Graphite or White, while the Kindle Wi-Fi comes in Graphite only. No big deal, since you can find skins for either one. They both play MP3, they both can store and play audible books, they both have web browser capability, drawback for both they can only do one page at a time, they both have clear sharp screens, easy to learn how to use.
So what's the $50 difference -- connectivity.

The Kindle Wi-Fi for $139: Free Wi-Fi access in AT&T hotspots, no sign ups, no logins, no registration required. Downloads using Wi-Fi are faster. If you have no problem connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots or are within the AT&T 3G area, or have Wi-Fi connectivity at home, then this is a good buy. And, if you don't mind that it comes in only the graphite color.

The Kindle 3G (+Wi-Fi) for $189: The $50 difference. Free 3G access in over 100 countries. You get mobile connectivity anywhere, anytime, no worrying about Wi-Fi hotspots. The Kindle 3G also offers the Wi-Fi connectivity option if you are in a AT&T 3G area or wi-fi hot-spot for faster downloads of your books.

If you don't travel internationally or have no trouble finding Wi-Fi hotspots, then you definitely want to consider the Kindle Wi-Fi, and save yourself $50.

If you have trouble finding Wi-Fi hot spots, not sure what a hot-spot is or if you even have connectivity, or live outside the AT&T 3G area, you should consider buying the Kindle 3G.  Also, if you are buying the Kindle as a Christmas present for someone else, I'd suggest buying the Kindle 3G since you may not know if the person has wi-fi connectivity in their area.  Nothing worse than buying a gift the person is frustrated using.
