Kindle class: Darden tests e-book

Joe Chard just started the MBA program at Darden Business School, and he just got a Kindle, Amazon’s electronic reader.

“I had it on the coffee table and my wife put a cup of coffee on it,” says Chard. “I said, ‘No– it’s expensive.’ She thought it was a book.”

And with Darden-emblazoned leather jackets on the test Kindles, they do look like slender volumes.

Chard is one of 60 students from the class of 2011 chosen to try out the “wireless reading device” that could obsolete books in a pilot program with Amazon.

“I was really excited when I heard they were using them,” says Chard. “Then I heard it was only one section, not the whole class.” The incoming class is divided into five sections, and Chard was relieved to be in the Kindle-using section.

“I’m a little bit leery of it,” says section-mate student Liz Brower, “because I’m traditional.” But Kindle use is not mandatory, and she’s willing to give it a shot.

Even among faculty, pleased with the prestige of Darden being one of Amazon’s chosen seven schools– the others are Princeton, Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Pace, University of Washington and Reed College in Oregon– there’s a bit of apprehension.

“I’m a book person,” says associate dean Robert Carraway. “It scared me.”

However, he touts the improved screen size and lighting of the latest model, the Kindle DX, how lightweight it is, and how it solves certain reading dilemmas, such as, “When you’re rushing to catch a plane and trying to decide which two books to grab.”

And the New York Times, Washington Post and Boston Globe are available on Kindle at a reduced subscription rate.

Reducing paper consumption was one of things that interested Darden in the device.

“That really resonated with me because of Darden’s sustainability initiative,” says Michael Koenig, Darden’s liaison with Amazon. He envisions “a paperless MBA.”

Darden is the only business school in the pilot program, and its case studies will be available to the students on Kindle as well as on paper, at least for the first year. Students who wish to keep their retail-$299 Kindles at the end year may do so for $200.

Whether Kindle will be the reading device of the future, Koenig can’t say. “We were not convinced it had value, but were eager to test it out,” he notes, citing Darden’s innovative spirit.

Joe Chard plays with his Kindle like a kid with a new toy. “It’s really easy to read,” he says, and demonstrates how if the angle of the Kindle changes from vertical to horizontal, the text changes to be readable from the different angle as well.

But watch the coffee. If the e-reader gets broken, says Koenig, “We’re not going to invest in another Kindle.”

Why Do I Keep Thinking Star Trek

Every time I see the Kindle, I keep thinking of star trek. I remember as a kid watching the tv show and seeing the yeoman giving the captain a report to read, it wasn't a book, but a metal box, and he just glanced at it and then signed it. I thought to myself, how cool was that. Where were the papers? Didn't he have to turn a page or something. Nope just glance, and sign. I wanted one of those. For what I don't know but it looked so not of this world. That was the 60's, the 1960's and it was just sci-fi.

Now it's the 21st century, and there's the Kindle. Not a metal box but now my dream has come true. Sweet.

Chicago Writer Bryan Alaspa Releases Free Novel for eBook Fans: Novel Available in Format for eReaders and SmartPhones

Chiago author Bryan W. Alaspa continues his trend of being on the cutting edge of technology. He has released a novel exclusively for eBook fans. The novel, "Gone," is available for those with eBook readers as well as smartphones such as the iPhone and G1.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 3, 2009 -- Chicago native and author Bryan W. Alaspa has been a proponent of electronic books from the start of his professional career. With the advent and increased popularity of e-Book readers such as Kindle and the Sony reader and the increased proliferation of smartphones and other devices that allow for e-Book reading, he had decided to release a novel, for free, for those using such devices. The novel, titled "Gone," will only be available via download at the website www.feedbooks.com.

"I have found that e-Book publishers have been the most receptive to my work from the beginning," said Mr. Alaspa. "I have been a fan of e-Books for a long time and I am just glad to see that they are finally starting to catch on in the mainstream. It just means that fans of reading can carry an entire library with them instead of having to lug around hundreds of books. So, as a treat for those who have embraced this medium as much as I have, I wanted to make this available to them and available to them for free."

Feedbooks.com makes their books available for download for all of the available e-Book readers, such as Amazon.com's Kindle. However, it also uses the epub format that makes the downloads available for smartphones such as the iPhone and the G1.

"I just recently joined the smartphone crowd with the purchase of a G1 phone," adds Mr. Alaspa. "I was giddy to find out I could download hundreds of books on a device I could hold in one hand. So, I had to make one of my books available for others who were like me."

"Gone" is a horror novel written by Mr. Alaspa about a year ago. It tells the terrifying tale of a group of friends who work at a company and are on a weekend retreat. When the group wakes up in the morning to find one of their number is missing, the terror begins. This is the second work of horror that Mr. Alaspa has written, with "Rig" being the first and that was released in print in 2008.

Those interested in the book can visit the website www.feedbooks.com. They can download the books there or download them using apps available for smartphones such as the iPhone or G1.

I Love to Read

Try the Kindle2 - Newest Reading Device -New Price

I love to read. My passion began in elementary school. At first I had trouble even learning to read. Those squiggly lines just didn't make sense to me. It was difficult to even try to understand what the teacher was talking about. She wanted us to follow along as she read. How could I follow, I didn't even know what she was talking about. It was as though my eyes would not focus, my eyes and my brain were not insync. Then one day something wonderful happened, suddenly everything snapped into place. It was like one minute these marks on the page made no sense, then bam, suddenly it all fell into place. Like someone threw a door open and I had access to what was on the other side.

Could I read now, could I follow the teacher on the page. YES, I could. I read the stuffing out of Dick and Jane, and that dog Spot. Then one day while in 3rd grade, I wanted something more to read. So I just started looking through our reader, and at the back of the book we were using, I found a more advanced story, a fairytale. Looked interesting, so I started reading. It was about a good and fair young girl who did a good deed and was rewarded when she went through a doorway. She was showered with gold coins. Her evil and ugly sisters were jealous and tried to go through the same doorway and were covered in tar. Can't remember the name of the story but I was transported. I had to get more, I found every reader I could get my hands on to see if they had more stories like that. Then I discovered the school library, I was in book heaven. I discovered Greek and Roman mythology, Shakespeare, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Robert Heinlein, and many many others. I now had other worlds to explore, other places to travel to, and adventures to share.

Now I'm older and I still love to read. I can't just have one book with me, I have to have several at a time. I love to have more than one book in the process of reading. Sometimes I'll have 2 or 3 books I'm reading at one time. My biggest problem is keeping up with them, and where I left off. I always forget to put the bookmarks in so I have to try from memory to remember where I left off in each book. Another problem is making sure I can find one of the books I was reading. You misplace, it falls down behind something or someone borrows it. If you're traveling it's a bit difficult to carry as many books as you would like, and still have enough room in your suitcase for your clothes. Or your bookbag could give a weightlifter a hernia. I developed some nice muscles as I was growing up carrying that oversize bookbag.

Now I can carry my books with alot less weight, no need to worry about someone borrowing my book without telling me, or me losing it behind the sofa. I can always have my books with me no matter where I go, to the doctor's office, a restaurant, the auto repair shop, waiting in line. I found the Kindle2. The Kindle2, is Amazon's newest reading device। I was intrigued। I'd seen the advertising for the Kindle, but I always like to wait until something has been around for a while, waiting for them to get the bugs out। Then I forgot about it. Then one day while I was surfing, I came across an ad for the Kindle2.

Light weight, easy to download books, most books cost $9.99 or less. Don't have to run to the bookstore, I can download directly to the Kindle2. Okay, this caught my eye and I decided to try it. If you share my love of reading and want to be able to take it on the road, or stop the muscle building, take a look at the Kindle2. It even has the voice reader so you can share the story with your friends or when you feel too tired to read. Another great feature of the Kindle2 is it will always remember where you left off reading, especially if you're like me and forget to put in the bookmark
